Breeding

Wij zetten graag nieuwe, innovatieve pioenrassen in de markt.

Since 2014, we at Borst Flowers have been breeding peonies. We do this in collaboration with Borst Bloembollen. Every year we make many new crosses, with the aim of breeding promising new varieties.

Cut flower properties

Breeding peonies is an extensive process to which we devote a lot of time and attention. We don’t just do that, because our selection criteria are strict. We find these properties very important for new varieties:

  • Rich flowering
  • Strong stems
  • Beautiful button presentation
  • Unique colors and flower shapes
  • Extent to which the flower is filled
  • Good shelf life
  • Opens well in the vase
  • Cutting health
  • Cuttings must grow nicely apart and be easy to divide

Our approach

Only after the sixth year of cultivation do we make a selection based on these cut flower properties. These selections are cloned and set to three years. Then another selection round takes place. We then include the best and most beautiful cuttings in our two-year cutting cultivation. A small portion is placed on the cut flower corner for a long period of time and evaluated to discover how the plants ‘behave’ (develop) over several years. With the aim of ultimately producing the most beautiful, unique cut flowers.
